Возможно, вы удивитесь, но родиной китайского фонарика — была Южная Америка.
Существует красивая легенда: о бедной деревенской девушке, которая день и ночь работавшая не покладая рук. Она взмолилась небесам о счастье. Утром, в ответ на ее просьбы, под окном девушки вырос куст с цветами, похожими на нарядные бумажные фонарики. После девушка встретила красивого, богатый и доброго юношу, который ее полюбил всем сердцем. Девушка вышла за него замуж и была счастлива долгие годы. С тех пор физалис — «китайский фонарик» — считается символом исполнения заветных желаний.
Лучше всего он помогает в любви и семейных делах.

В России наиболее широко распространён в диком виде Physalis alkekengi L. — Физалис Алкекенги, или физалис обыкновенный, или физалис Франше, или Китайский фонарик. Это растение зимует в умеренном климате и ежегодно отрастает из корневищ. Плоды этого вида непригодны для употребления в пищу из-за горьковатого привкуса. Physalis ixocarpa Brot. — физалис клейкоплодный, или овощной физалис, или мексиканский физалис, или мексиканский томат
